Cocktails at Bemelmans, a stunning Art Deco bar with a distinctive New York vibe
A historical and high-class hotel, The Carlyle has hosted many important guests. One of the most unique, however, was artist Ludwig Bemelmans, who is famous for his “Madeline” childrens books, and works in The New Yorker, and Vogue. Refusing payment for his artwork, Bemelmans created murals within the hotel in exchange for accommodations for he and his family. Today, his works remain as the only Bemelmans murals on public display, currently in the cocktail lounge that bears his name.
Bemelmans Bar carefully juxtaposes the playful nature of the artists’ work with stunning Art Deco design. Rabbits on a picnic overlook lush chocolate leather chairs. Illustrated elephants gaze up at the 24 karat gold ceiling, as the bar tenders work diligently to serve up the finest crafted cocktails over the black granite bar. Guests relax beside black glass tables with nickel accented rims.
A warm, sensual, and discreet location, it’s no surprise that so many A-listers and socialites have frequented this bar during its historic past. The bar features a splendid offering of specialty cocktails, fine wines, craft beers, and a delightful small meal menu. The experience reminds many of the lush and prestigious parlours of old New York, the perfect compliment to the amazing luxury residence experience available only at The Carlyle.
Bemelmans Bar offers an exclusive Bemelmans’ Famous List, featuring a blend of historic and creative drink options. The Agave Gingerita is a favourite among many guests. Sporting a Latin flair, this drink features Patron Silver tequila, Grand Marnier, Cointreau, egg white, lime juice, simple syrup, and ginger liquor, poured and served on the rocks. This refreshing drink begins with a sour note, and finishes on the sweet side.
